Social-Distancing from Animal Abuse

By : Manas Disoriya

The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated. - Mahatma Gandhi

If you think isolation is hard after having Netflix, video games and social networking sites then think again, we still have a lot of options, we can cook, read, write, play, meditate, exercise, dance, pick up a new hobby, and can even go out for a while, but have you ever been in a small jar or cage or a small room? Just to think about it makes us feel claustrophobic, right. Perhaps, we should use this time, when we all are stuck inside our homes, not able to enjoy the freedom that we used to have, to think about the animals and their freedom. Animal cruelty has long been an important issue in India and has historically been denied the importance it deserves; if you think your city is safe for animals you are wrong. To expound my point, one may refer to the instances below :

 Body of a leopard with its head & paws cut off, found in Maharashtra.  A private security guard in Gurugram attempts to burn a street dog alive.  Chennai man drags dog on road, beats it up then throws it into a pond.  Three men in Agra kidnap neighbor’s pet dog, take turns to rape it.  Animals are being used as photo props and jabbed with metal spikes for tourism.

Not only do these instances point towards a severe lack of humanity and kindness for the life of other beings, but these people’s actions also point towards their barbaric actions and sadistic natures, intentional cruelty to animals is strongly correlated with other crimes, including violence against people.

We all are aware of human welfare but we don’t want to think about animal welfare for even a moment just because of the choices we make. Pet owners should give their pets positive experiences that enhance their well-being; people should foster animals in need. Furthermore, if they see any animal cruelty, abuse, or neglect they should do whatever they can to stop it or inform the concerned authorities. The most important thing is that we should all come together to educate people around us about this issue. There should be a mandatory session every week for school and college students in which they can learn about nature and animals moreover, how to protect them. Perhaps we should demand stricter laws for the protection of animals because there are laws for animal cruelty but they need to be drastically changed. We should all come together to help animals, as they are unable to fight for their rights and stop animal cruelty as they deserve to enjoy their freedom and live a happy and healthy life. If freedom and autonomy are things we want for our own lives, then how ignorant of us to deny those very things to others, when they too want the same for their existence.
